HepCPoster.jpg
Spatial Analysis of Hepatitis C in British Columbia

A school project for Advanced Topics in GIS. This analysis investigated whether there is an association between Hepatitis C infections and factors such as income or age, and found that Aboriginal ancestry, certain age groups, and population explained a portion of the variability in Hepatitis C infections. This is not to say, however, that individuals in those groups are more likely to contract Hepatitis C.

Heart Disease, income, and stress level in Canada

Another Advanced Topics in GIS project, this one provides a visual comparison between provincial rates of heart disease and two variables: income, and perceived stress.

Snow.jpg
Spring Snow Cover in Valhalla Provincial Park, Selkirk Mountains, British Columbia

For this remote sensing project, I used Google Earth Engine (GEE) to extract, filter, and classify Landsat 8 images to determine whether using GEE and the Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) was a reasonable method to measure change in snow coverage over time. It turns out, other methods are needed - ones that don't rely on cloud-free images for accurate analysis. We get a lot of cloud cover in the mountains in the Kootenays and there weren't enough images to identify any significant trends. However, spaced-based radar methods offer an interesting alternative!

Bird Sightings in the Columbia Basin-Boundary Region

This programming final project involved extracting data from a truly massive dataset of bird sightings in British Columbia, filtering by location and species, and then turning that data into rasters and creating maps. The end result was 20 maps showing 20 different bird species, and where sightings of them were concentrated in the region. Excluding the initial layout design, every step of this project was done using code.

VierWaldStaettersee.jpg
Elevation Map of Vierwaldstaettersee, Switzerland

This map was designed to be laser-cut from multiple layers of plywood to show the elevation of the mountains surrounding part of the Vierwaldstaettersee in Kanton Schwyz, Switzerland (although I've changed the symbolization here slightly for display). This layout was imported into Illustrator and divided into layers for printing.

This is a special spot for my husband and his family. Their family home is in Gersau, right on the waterfront.
